When it comes to cuisine, Maui has a wide variety of local dishes to offer. First, try to narrow down precisely what you are looking for. Do you want authentic local food? Or maybe a place where the whole family can find something they like? Have you been thinking about trying a specific dish since you started planning your vacation? No matter what it is, we can guarantee there's a place for whatever you seek.
Below we've compiled a list of our favorite affordable, go-to spots to grab a bite to eat on the island. We hope these satisfy your appetite!
Located in Kahului, about 5 minutes from the airport, Tin Roof is a classic local favorite. It has been named Maui's hottest lunch spot, only open Monday-Saturday from 10 am-8 pm.
Make sure you fit this into your vacation because it is a can't-miss kind of place. Tin Roof is famous for its mochiko chicken dish, chicken covered with sweet mochiko batter, fried, then topped with delicious gochujang aioli.
They have a wide variety of other local dishes, including garlic shrimp plates, poke bowls, and revolving daily specials that you can't miss.
Local tip: Order online and pick up in-store to avoid crowds, especially since seating is limited.
Just like Tin Roof, this is a coveted lunch spot that is only open for a few hours a day, but worth it to make time for it. Located in Kihei, South Maui Fish Company is a food truck that boasts a menu full of island favorites.
Most famous for its fresh local catch and mouth-watering poke bowls, this spot should be at the top of your list.
If you're on the hunt for fish tacos, look no further because these are also on the menu; topped with a pineapple coconut milk slaw, they are unlike any other on Maui. They even have hot dogs for the kiddos or friend who doesn't want fish!
Local tip: If you're not ready to fully commit to a poke bowl full of raw fish, try sharing one of their fish plates with a friend! These have a generous portion of fresh fish, rice, and slaw, more than enough to share between 2-3 people.
In the heart of Kihei, right off of South Kihei Road, sits the brightly colored Kinaole Grill Food Truck. Perfect for lunch or dinner, this truck is parked close to Kamaole 1 Beach Park, making it easy to grab a bite to eat and take it to the beach for a picnic lunch or sunset dinner.
The truck serves local-style "plate lunches" and is the perfect spot if you're looking for seafood!
Some of their food options include coconut shrimp, mahi mahi, and seared ahi. Delicious food close to the beach is a definite win in our book!
Brekkie Bowls
For the best acai bowl on Maui, look no further! Brekkie Bowls is a hidden gem located in North Kihei.
This acai bowl "food truck" is tucked away near Makena CrossFit gym, but don't let the location fool you; this place is the real deal. Here you'll find fresh, quality ingredients with stellar customer service. You can customize any bowl to your liking and even try a specialty "pitaya fruit" bowl!
Local tip: If you like matcha, try the superfood city bowl. It comes with acai, chia pudding, and matcha puree!
