It’s easy for sunny Maui to throw your favorite summer wear in a bag and call it a day.
However, you’ll want to think through your trip and make sure you’re prepared for whatever adventures you go on without the dreaded overpacking.
The right pack job can make your Maui vacation hassle-free and more enjoyable, leaving you with more time to enjoy being at the beach or on a mountain and less time to feel uncomfortable.
Besides the classic underwear and pajamas, you’ll want to bring 2 pairs of shorts, 2-3 pairs of shirts and tank tops, and a couple of swimsuits. Don’t forget the camera!
Bring a dress or a nice outfit if you plan on going to a Luau or a fancy dinner.
Depending on what adventures you’re going to be on during your trip, you might want to bring a few additional items.
You won’t need much beyond your regular beach wear for the Road to Hana. It’s common to wear a swimsuit under a comfortable pair of clothes and bring a good pair of hiking sandals, a dry bag, and a warm layer for the ride back. Pick up some snacks once you’re on the road, and you’ll be good to go!
Haleakala summit is at 10,000 feet elevation—meaning it’s really cold! Make sure to bring a pair of pants and at least one sweater if you plan on doing this activity.
If your vacation rental has extra blankets bring those along too. Just put them back when you’re done!
Hiking on Maui is a must-do if you’re not afraid to get a little muddy! We would recommend bringing a dry bag, a microfiber towel, sandals (locally called slippers) for wet hikes, and sneakers for dry hikes.
If you’re planning on spending a lot of time on the water, it’s a good idea to bring a long-sleeved swim shirt.
If you already own nice snorkeling gear or water shoes, you should bring them along too. Otherwise, just go ahead and rent them once you’re on the island to save space in your suitcase.
Don’t bother bringing towels with you— your vacation rental will have some for you to use!
You also shouldn’t bring non-reef-safe sunscreen, snake repellant (no need for that!), or valuable jewelry/watches that could get damaged or lost.
Maui is a very casual place! You’ll see locals wearing shorts, t-shirts, and slippers (sandals). It’s considered dressy to wear Aloha shirts and jeans!
Maui is a very warm place but can get cool upcountry and at the summit of Haleakala. Bringing a few warmer items is a good idea, but leave most of those clothes at home.
The best kind of shoes to wear in Maui are comfortable ones that are easy to slip on and off!
Hopefully, this guide for what to pack for Maui is helpful— as long as you have a swimsuit, you’ll be fine!
Make sure to bring only the essentials of what you need so that you can get cool souvenirs without having to buy another suitcase, and get ready for the tropical vacation of your dreams.
